North Queensland police are warning residents of a scam that appears to be targeting older people who have accounts with the National Australia Bank (NAB).
Police Sergeant Nigel Dalton says a number of people have contacted police saying they have been called by a man with an Indian accent to say they have unclaimed funds but need to first pay a release fee.
He says the caller also provides a Canberra number that people can call if they have concerns.
"Sometimes when we get those sort of offers we think to ourselves they must be okay because they're actually providing a safety net there, so I won't bother doing that because they're obviously very professional," Sergeant Dalton said.
"So what we need to be [is] very, very careful of, if there's any offer that comes through, whether it's a prize or whether it's a prize or inheritance, if sounds too good to be true, it probably is."
