Immigration officials have arrested nine Chinese nationals found to be working illegally in Melbourne.

The Immigration Department says the seven men and two women entered Australia on student or student-related visas and have been living in boarding houses in the city's north.

The Department says they have been working illegally in the construction and retail industries.

They have been taken to the Maribyrnong Detention Centre and will be deported.
